In the 3rd part of the series \"Alternatives to the Swiss franc\", we would like to present the Canadian dollar as an alternative to the Swiss franc. Currency alternative to the Swiss franc<\/a> introduce. So after two Scandinavian currencies, we now turn to North America.<\/p>\n

\"Canadian dollar\" is the name for the currency of Canada, the second largest country in the world in terms of area after Russia. Internationally, the abbreviation CAD is also commonly used for the Canadian dollar, which is not just a naturalized abbreviation in banking, but a currency abbreviation defined in ISO 4217.<\/p>\n

The origin of the Canadian dollar in 1871<\/strong>
\nThe history of the CAD in its current form begins with the year 1871, because in April of that year the dollar was introduced in Canada. At that time, it hardly played a role as a currency alternative for foreign investors; rather, it was initially a further step in the unification of the country, which was formed from British and French colonial territories. Since then, a single currency has been used in all Canadian provinces, which was not the case before for historical reasons.<\/p>\n

The legal basis for the introduction of a single Canadian currency was the Uniform Currency Act, known in French as the Loi sur l'uniformit\u00e9 de la monnaie. Originally, the CAD was gold-backed - as were many other currencies of the time. After several decades, however, gold backing was abandoned in 1933.<\/p>\n
